The Standedge Tunnel is considered one of the UK’s ‘seven wonders of the waterways’. Stretching for 3.5 miles beneath the Pennines, it’s the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in the country and took more than 17 years to dig by hand. Impressive stuff.

Now, you can paddle through it for the very first time. Canal and Rivers Trust is organising ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ canoe trips through Standedge Tunnel to give people an insight into its history and to raise money to keep the UK's canal network alive and well.

Sean McGinley, regional director for Yorkshire and North East at Canal and River Trust, said: ‘We’re excited to launch a new chapter in the history of Standedge Tunnel, a real wonder of the waterways.

‘Our charity is working harder than ever to keep our historic 250-year-old canal network alive. This experience is one of the many ways people can help support our work, contributing to the vital funds needed to help us maintain our 2,000-mile network of canals and assets, while discovering this amazing treasure under the Pennines.’

The trips are for more experienced canoeists and cost £100 for a two-person canoe or £55 for a solo paddler. Sadly, all 18 excursions planned for this summer are now sold out, but the charity is looking into adding a few more and plans to offer the experience again in 2025. Look out for available sessions over on the Canal and River Trust site
