For holidays, some people prefer a city break, others like to get away from it all by spending a few days in nature. Now there’s a chance to get really away from it all, by staying the night on this remote island with only one house.

Sound up your street? You need to know about Lihou, a deserted island off the west coast of Guernsey with no internet or phone signal, where you can stay for just £40 a night.

A stint on Lihou is a chance to experience the proper island life. The island has only one habitable house managed by the Lihou Charitable Trust, and there’s definitely no wi-fi. Going off-grid is part of Lihou’s charm, and getting there is also part of the adventure: the island can only be accessed via a rocky causeway from Guernsey during low tide for roughly two weeks each month.

There are no shops or amenities on the island, so make sure to stock up on booze, chocolate and dried goods before making the trip along the slippery quarter-mile causeway to reach it. If you’re more of a city person, you might want to sit this one out. But outdoors enthusiasts will love the island's ancient priory ruins and the Venus Pool, a natural formation that appears at low tide. Lihou is also a crucial nesting and roosting site for gulls and waders, as well as a stopover for migratory birds, making it ideal for birdwatchers.

You can book a stay at Lihou House for just £40 per person per night with a minimum of 10 people staying (but no stag, hen dos, 18th or 21st birthdays allowed). Just don’t try to start your own Fyre Festival. For school groups it’s just £20 per person. The accommodation is pretty simple, with nine bedrooms and can sleep up to 30 people at a time.
