To the average passerby, St John’s Church in East Horrington looks like any other church. You’ve got the classic Gothic spires, intricate stained glass windows and an adjoining graveyard. Y’know, the normal church stuff.
However, on closer inspection, you’ll find that there’s quite a lot more to St John’s. Around the back is a hot tub, while inside are six luxury bedrooms. That’s because this church, which was built in 1838, was converted for residential use and is now available to rent on Airbnb. And it looks very much worth the risk of a ghost encounter.
Though it still has all the impressive features of a gothic church, St John’s is bright and modern, featuring a slick black wood burning stove and a gorgeous green sunroom. Guests enter via the original vicar’s entrance and are met by the large central nave with 30 foot ceilings.
The dining room sits on the mezzanine over the altar and the living room, which owners proudly call ‘the showpiece of the house’ has a 20 foot high ceiling, offering views across the countryside all the way to Glastonbury Tor. One previous guest said it was ‘breathtaking’ and ‘even better than the photos’, while another called it ‘such a special place’.
With Bath and Bristol both only a half hour’s drive away and Glastonbury just 15 minutes, this church would make the perfect base for a staycation. And since it sleeps up to 14 guests, you can get the whole extended family involved. Here are a few more pics of the place.
