You haven’t budget-travelled hard enough until you end up staying overnight at ’Spoons. No, not by any illegal or accidental measures – Wetherspoon has a chain of low-cost hotels, and the chain is opening up a brand-new one in Merseyside.

The affordable pub brand announced that Southport’s Sir Henry Segrave pub, named after a racecar driver who lived in the area before his death, would be getting an upgrade from simply being a boring old boozer to an exciting seaside hotel.

Set just a 10-minute walk from the beach, the guest house will be equipped with 30 rooms – all en-suite – and will be built in the same 19th-century building as the bar.

The chain’s other hotels nearby go for anywhere from £60-£80 per night depending on how far in advance you book, so it’s pretty likely that this one will be similar. You’ll also, of course, have access to the classic Wetherspoons breakfast.

The architects who have been working on the project have assured that the historical significance of the building, primarily its age, will be respected, with the outside details remaining intact except for some changes made to accommodate more fire exits and a brand new entrance.

Planning permission has only just been granted, so it could be a little while before we’ll actually be able to stay for the night at the Sir Henry Segrave. Until then, the pub itself is still open for business, serving all your favourite ales and spirits at reassuringly low prices. Never change, ’Spoons, never change.
