It’s the time of year when you have to guess whether the ill feelings you’ve woken up with are symptoms of a cold, flu – or Covid. But there are two new signs that will help you tell whether you have coronavirus.

Professor Tim Spector, founder of the ZOE Covid app, said that the tell-tale symptoms you should watch out for right now are: waking up tired (even if you’re had a restful night’s sleep) and a sore throat. If you have these two symptoms, then you should assume you have coronavirus, Professor Spector said.

According to latest figures, 1.3 million people tested positive for the virus in the week ending September 26, up 25 percent on the week before. Up to two thirds of people are testing positive for the virus are reporting a sore throat when they first become infected.

’There are twice as many Covid cases as common colds currently,’ Professor Spector wrote on Twitter. ‘The ratio has never been so high. Symptoms much the same except generally more fatigue and sore throat – so best to assume it’s Covid. Hopefully, this wave will be over soon.’

He also encouraged getting tested if possible. Currently antigen and PCR tests are no longer available for free.
