Margate’s got loads of arty residents these days, from The Libertines’ Pete Doherty to the communities of artists in Cliftonville who’ve been priced out of London. Perhaps the Kentish town’s most famous resident, however, is Tracey Emin, one of the UK’s most celebrated living artists. And now Emin looks set to make a massive mark on Margate’s seafront.

Back in 2020 when Emin was diagnosed with bladder cancer, she vowed to create a lasting legacy through community engagement. In March last year, she opened an art school in Margate which also doubles up as a studio rental and training kitchen for locals in hospitality. And she doesn’t plan on stopping there.

The 60-year-old artist – best known for autobiographic, confessional pieces like ‘My Bed’ – has purchased the now-derelict Westbrook Loggia building at Westbrook Bay. And she has plans to give the space a major glow-up. Emin is looking to convert the ex-bathing pavilion (originally constructed in 1920) into a cool community bathing club with a cafe, art studio, sauna and rooftop sunbathing area.

Thanet District councillor Rick Everitt said: ‘We are pleased that the completion of this sale will secure a positive future for the Loggia. It occupies a prominent position on Westbrook Bay and holds fond memories for many local people and visitors.’

‘Tracey’s visionary plans for the restoration and revitalisation of the building reflect her deep connection to the area and her commitment to fostering community engagement and sustainable development.’

There are no announcements just yet about when the renovations will start – watch this space for updates.

ICYMI: Sheffield could be getting a vast new ‘zero carbon’ community.
