From fantastic art galleries and museums to thriving music scenes and world-renowned festivals, a tonne of cities all around the world are steeped in culture. Mexico City is home to the wonderful work of Frida Kahlo, Mumbai is known for Bollywood and performing arts... but did you know there’s also a city for culture that’s not quite so far away?
According to Time Out’s meticulous survey, which quizzed a whopping 21,000 city dwellers from all over the world about their city’s culture scene, the Scottish capital of Edinburgh is one of the planet’s most cultural places to be, coming sixth in the overall list.
August is the time when Edinburgh truly takes centre stage, with all the actual stages, big and small, that crop up on every street, pub and theatre for the annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It’s the biggest art festival in the world, showcasing the very best of new and up and coming comedy and performance.
However, the festival calendar includes a whole host of book, jazz and performing arts celebrations, too. In fact, the ‘variety’ of things on offer was one of the most praised aspects of the city in our survey. Alongside these annual events, Edinburgh is jam-packed full of great galleries, museums and live music venues which welcome culture vultures all year round.
