In news that’ll likely surprise absolutely no one, London Gatwick has just been named the worst major airport in Europe for delays. The second busiest aviation hub in the UK, just last week Gatwick saw easyJet cancel 1,700 flights from the airport throughout the summer due to worries about delays at air traffic control.
The new ranking comes as a result of data collected intergovernmental organisation Eurocontrol, which surveyed 110 airports across Europe. Out of those, Gatwick ranked 106th, making it the worst major aviation hub.
Many factors have led to Gatwick being so badly affected by delays in recent months. As well as suffering from staff shortages, a huge proportion of its flights involve European airspace. That means that the airport is disproportionally affected by airspace restrictions related to the war in Ukraine and ongoing air traffic control strikes.
In other words, it looks like it’ll be another slow summer in Sussex. Now check out a recent ranking of the best (and worst) UK airports.
