Manchester is evolving. Its suburbs are being invested in by outside forces, gaining useful public transport links and more vibrant cultural hubs. The latest approved Mancunian-adjacent improvement project is in Wythenshawe, where the town centre is in desperate need of some TLC, having last been made-over in the 1970s.

The £500m refurb will see more than 1,700 homes built in the area, as well as brand new shops, restaurants, and dedicated community and cultural spaces – not too different to what’s happening just down the road in Prestwich.

Developer Muse, which previously worked on suburbs like Stockport and Salford, has been chosen to oversee the process. Councillor Bev Craig expressed excitement at this appointment, describing it as a ‘key moment’ for the town’s future. The council has pledged £30m in initial funds to get things off the ground.

Craig also said: ‘There’s a lot to be excited about and we’ll keep the local community up to date on progress’. Clearly they’re anticipating the new village square as much as anyone else.

There’s no start date for construction yet other than a vague suggestion of sometime in 2025, but things could speed up now that Muse is involved, so keep your ear to the ground. Once in motion, you could see a brand new re-imagined Wythenshawe within a year or two. The future really is nigh.

Looking to move?

Wythenshawe’s not the only place worth settling down in. Saltcoats is officially the cheapest seaside town to move to, if you’re into that sort of thing. If you prefer to roam at night, Manchester has some of the best nightlife in the world, or if neither of those take your fancy, why not just buy yourself a castle and move off the grid? The possibilities really are endless.

These are the highest ranked UK universities in Clearing 2024.

Plus: The UK’s oldest pier has just had a £10 million revamp.
