One of the best things about living in the UK is how old so much stuff is. It’s fairly easy to find buildings built a few hundred years ago. But even in Britain, not much remains from the medieval era.

It’s been nearly a millennium since Dover castle was first established. Before it was destroyed by a now ‘forgotten’ civil war and French conquerers, it was a bastion of power on the east coast. It still stands, but vastly different to how it looked in all its original glory.

Until, that is, today. Historians reckon Dover Castle deserves to remember the good old days. They’ve digitally recreated the castle as it was in 1216, creating an accurate 3D digital model.

According to expert Paul Pattison: ‘The level of detail is astonishing. It has taken us months of research, deliberation and difficult decision-making to be able to produce.

‘From historical records, plans and maps, and archaeological, topographic and laser surveys – we’ve left no stone unturned in making this model as accurate as possible.’

The castle will also be opening up Georgian underground tunnels for visitors, meaning you can really get the full ‘fighting for my country in the eighteenth century’ experience.

The museum says that ‘as well as enabling the public to explore new areas of the castle, the experience includes a new exhibition with films, lights and soundscapes, hands-on elements and a new siege-themed play area’. You can learn more about all of Dover Castle’s new exhibits here. Enjoy the throwback!
