When you think of the UK’s great nightlife capitals, it becomes clear just how spoilt for choice we are. From Manchester and Glasgow to Leeds and Bristol, so many British towns and cities boast terrific nightlife scenes with scintillating clubs, exquisite bars and buzzy venues.

The latest to have their say in crowning Britain’s nightlife capital is online bank Monzo, which recently revealed its ‘Year in Monzo’. While the ‘Year in Monzo’ is best known for packaging up individual users’ spending habits, it also does so for the nation in general – thereby revealing trends across the country.

2023’s ‘Year in Monzo’ revealed that Monzo users in Leicester spent the most on nights out, naming it the country’s nightlife capital.

Sure, just because people spend a lot on nightlife doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. But you’d like to think, considering that Leicester is a pretty affordable place to live (according to Numbeo, anyway), that Leicestrians are spending a lot because they’re having a rollicking good time.

In any case, Leicester isn’t the only UK city having some late-night fun, according to Monzo. The ‘Year in Monzo’ also highlighted Liverpool as the place with the most food bought between the hours of 11pm and 4am. Liverpudlians are partial to a midnight snack or mid/post-club pit stop, it seems.
