Moseley Road Baths in Birmingham first opened in 1907 and is one of the UK’s oldest listed swimming pools still in use. It’s also the only pool in the country to have held continuous swimming events since before 1914, so, naturally, it’s near and dear to the hearts of people in Brum (and beyond).
Given its age, Moseley Road Baths is well due a bit of a revamp – and that’s exactly what it’s currently getting. The pool closed back in October 2023 so that work could begin on giving the place a makeover and prevent it falling into further decay.
With help from the government’s levelling up fund, a huge £15.5million has been put into the renovation. The project will include a new cafe, gym and wellbeing hub, as well as upgrades to the roof and boilers.
Conservation enthusiasts, fear not – Moseley Road Baths will still retain much of its original Edwardian charm. The pre-war segregated washing baths, ticket office, attendants kiosk and gorgeous glass roof will remain pride of place.
If all goes to plan, it’s hoped the Grade II-listed pool will open up again in 2025. In the meantime, the rest of the building is still being used for weekly events including lunchtime discotheques’, knitting events and martial arts.
Viv Harrison, general manager at Moseley Road Baths, said: ‘It’s wonderful that we’ve been able to come together with other organisations who share a love of this beautiful Grade II-listed building, to champion our local heritage and secure it for future generations.
‘This levelling up funding has come out of decades of campaigning by the local community to keep the pool open for swimming, and we couldn’t be more excited about the future.’
