With famous beaches and the ‘best theme park in the UK’, Blackpool is one of the UK’s best-loved holiday destinations. But soon it could be easier to get to and from the northern resort town, as Blackpool airport has moved forward with plans for a new terminal building.
Blackpool’s airport has been closed since 2016, with locals forced to fly instead from Liverpool airport – 30 miles away. Back in the summer the airport announced plans to build a brand-new £616,000 terminal, and now it has appointed contractors to do so. The airport’s plans feature a larger arrival and departure lounge, plus new baggage and security equipment, all with the aim of restarting scheduled flights.
So, could we be flying from Blackpool international sometime soon? Honestly, it’s unlikely – unless you’re a regular user of private planes. The airport’s bosses have ruled out the return of commercial flights, instead preferring corporate flights.
Blackpool airport was previously a travel hub offering flights to Europe, serving destinations in Spain and Portugal as recently as 2012. The airport operated just 39,000 flights last year, which were mostly flying lessons and private flights.
