There are nearly 40,000 pubs in England. Only one can be the best.

Every year, hundreds of pubs up and down the country compete to be named VisitEngland’s ‘pub of the year’. The competition is stiff, the beer is cold, and the prize is epic bragging rights for 365 blissful days.

Last year a Peak District Michelin-rated gastropub called the Blind Bull came out on top, but not all winners come from such lofty places. This year’s victor is much more humble, and a lot more remote.

We can see that you’re on the edge of your seat. Without further ado, the official pub of the year 2024 is… The Peterville Inn in Cornwall! According to the good people at VisitEngland, it ‘[champions] local and seasonal produce, with regularly changing menus that reflect the very best of Cornish farm, field and sea.’

Well done, The Peterville Inn! Only a 15-minute walk from one of Cornwall’s many picturesque hidden beach coves, it’s a perfect end to a summer day trip.

In second place was the Acord Inn, nestled into a Dorset village which is straight out of an Enid Blyton novel, and coming home with bronze was the Red Fox, which is just outside Liverpool

But it isn’t just pubs that VisitEngland celebrates. This year’s gold awards covered some serious ground, awarding the industry’s best in everything from ethical farming to accessibility. You can read more about the organisation’s choice for the best visitor attraction here

Congratulations to all the pubs named. Out of 40,000 stars, you shine the brightest. May your beer kegs be ever-flowing and all your glasses stay permanently in one piece.

Fancy a pint?

We also know a thing or two about what makes a good pub. Why not celebrate the oncoming heatwave in one of these spectacular beer gardens? Or check out one of these pubs with really gorgeous interiors? Or just have a read of our favourite pubs in the country.
