With the devastating death of Topshop and the closure of other high-street staples – from Paperchase to bank branches – it’s safe to say that many of our town centres could do with a bit of a facelift. And you know what? Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow is getting just that, with a huge £5.6 million makeover set to bring new trees, lighting and improved footpaths to the area.
The plans are all thanks to the award of a new multi-million contract for the city’s latest Avenues project, which has proposed rain gardens, 40 new street trees, and new kerbing and lighting, as well as road, pavement and footway reconstruction to improve Sauchiehall Precinct and Cambridge Street Avenue.
Susan Aitken, of Glasgow Council, told The Glasgow Times: ‘The Avenues programme – the biggest project of its kind in the UK – will not only bring a more attractive environment for everyone in the city centre, but improve connections around the area and encourage more walking, cycling and wheeling.
‘This latest Avenue, on Cambridge Street and a stretch of Sauchiehall Street, is a key part of the network, and will bring particular benefit to a part of the city that will undergo tremendous change in the coming years.’
Work will kick off in September this year and is set to be completed by summer 2024.
