Food sustains us, but food also brings us joy. Sure, you can get by on protein shakes and eggs, but why would you? If variety is the spice of life then dessert is the cherry on top, and TasteAtlas knows this all too well.

TasteAtlas, which travels the world in search of the very best cuisines, food cities, and dishes, knows good food, and the site understands what makes a good meal, including a dessert. TasteAtlas’s people have crafted a list of the most legendary dessert-erias across the globe, and one of them is on our shores.

It’s no secret that Harrogate is worth a visit – the AA even named it the best staycation in the UK earlier this year – and part of its charm is its quaint boutiques and tea rooms; one of which has made the international cut. Betty’s Cafe, which has been open for more than 100 years in the town’s historic centre, was named the 31st best place on the planet to grab a sweet treat.

According to TasteAtlas, Betty’s is celebrated for, ‘elegant interiors and delightful selection of pastries and teas,’ including its signature dish, the Fat Rascal. No, that isn’t a 1920s New York mobster, it’s a sort of scone filled with dried fruit, almonds, and cherries, which have been described as ‘utterly delicious’ and, ‘beautiful, moist, fruit filled creations that you can always rely on,’ by critics. The recipe is secret, so you really do have to visit to try it out.

The tearoom opened in 1920, and has since become a chain across Yorkshire, but the original is always the best. As well as the Fat Rascal, you can enjoy a traditional afternoon tea, a range of pastries, tarts, and cakes, or even a proper hearty lunch if that’s what you’re in the mood for. It’s come a long way in its century of life.

You can have a look at the rest of the world’s most legendary dessert shops here, and specifically check out what TasteAtlas has to say about Betty’s here. Just heed this warning: do not look when you’re hungry unless you want to be put into a bad mood and discover 17 new cravings.
