In times gone by, Scarborough was the place to be in the summer months. These days, it’s not quite the bustling holiday destination it used to be – but that could soon be about to change.

Scarborough’s local council has announced a goal to oversee an £11 million regeneration of the town’s pier, which has been described as ‘no longer fit for purpose’. The revamp would ‘breathe new life into the heart of Scarborough’s South Bay’, according to the plans.

So what is the council actually planning to do? Well, buzzwords aside, the existing buildings in the area would get renovated alongside a few new builds, both of which would result in ‘improved artists’ studios, harbour offices, and improved food and drink offer… new kiosks, bait sheds and new public toilets will also be provided’.

Local councillor Janet Jefferson explained: ‘The harbour and pier area play a critical role in Scarborough’s local economy… We are committed to engaging with [businesses to ensure] they feel part of the scheme from this early stage and can help us to deliver a fantastic destination for Scarborough.’

Public consultations have been ongoing for the past few years, and this month planning permission was finally submitted for review. A committee will now review the request, and if it’s granted, work would likely begin sometime next year.

Scarborough’s renaissance is dawning, and we’re here for it.
