Last week German airline Lufthansa announced that it would be pulling the plug on all of its flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Now it’s revealed that it will also be scrapping flights from Bristol Airport from February 3 2024.
Apparently, the company just doesn’t have enough planes to go round. Lufthansa started operating in Bristol in 2021, with daily flights to Frankfurt being its main offering. Travellers booked to fly to Frankfurt from the airport will be refunded and have to make plans to travel from elsewhere.
It’s a big blow to holidaymakers, especially since Frankfurt offers connecting flights to places like Singapore. The services aren’t necessarily gone for good, though. There is some hope that the airline will return once it deals with its shortage of planes.
A spokesperson for Bristol Airport said: ‘We are deeply disappointed to hear of Lufthansa’s decision to temporarily suspend the service between Bristol and Frankfurt, since the route was performing well. We will continue to work with Lufthansa to return the service and restart this important city link once the aircraft issues have been resolved.’
Tickets seem to be available for Lufthansa flights from Bristol to Germany in September but it's not clear whether they'll stick around. Here's hoping Bristolians can get their Frankfurt fix again soon.
Meanwhile, other aviation hubs across the UK have welcomed new airlines, offering journeys to more cities around the world. In 2024, Liverpool John Lennon is operating flights to an ‘underrated’ part of Europe, Ryanair will start operating flights from Norwich and Ryanair has also launched more flights from Cornwall.
