Brits love pubs. This is a known fact – and who can blame us? They’re a vital part of British culture and the UK is, thankfully, smothered in fantastic pubs, whether it’s a flat-out great Time Out-recognised boozer, a pub with spectacular a garden or simply your beloved local.

If you’ve ever wondered which UK area is lucky enough to have the most pubs, we have excellent news. Media conglomerate Reach Plc had dived into the data to reveal which areas of the country have the most pubs, then published a ranking. Reach reached (wink wink) its conclusions by listing pub numbers by capita, not quantity – effectively ranking areas with the best pubs-to-people ratio.

Top of the list came the Derbyshire Dales, which apparently boast a whopping 184.5 pubs for every 100,000 people. The study says that Derbyshire’s Dales has 132 pubs within its borders, higher – per capita – than anywhere else in the land.

Well, almost more than anywhere else. Reach’s study actually found that two other areas have more pubs per capita than the Derbyshire Dales. The City of London has 594.3 boozers per 100,000, while the Isles of Scilly has 269.2. These two areas were apparently discounted from the final ranking because low population numbers ‘skew the numbers’.

Second in the final list was Westminster in central London, which has 357 pubs per 100,000 residents, while third was Powys in Wales, with 165.1. Here are the top 10 places with the most pubs per person in the UK, according to Reach.

The UK areas with the most pubs per person

  1. Derbyshire Dales: 184.5
  2. Westminster: 168.8
  3. Powys: 165.1
  4. Pembrokeshire: 148.8
  5. Carmarthenshire: 145.2
  6. Ceredigion: 142.4
  7. Staffordshire Moorlands: 132.6
  8. Cotswold: 122.4
  9. East Lindsey: 121.1
  10. North Yorkshire: 120.3
