Big news: if you live in Northumberland, you might never need to fork out on an expensive foreign holiday ever again – because a seriously swanky hotel is opening there in spring 2023.

Housed on a private 150-acre estate, The Tempus will channel the same wacky energy as its sister, Charlton Hall, with an eclectic ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme across its 15 luxury bedrooms. Costumes optional.

For those who are tempted to book a stay, perhaps the most superior room is the hotel’s boutique suite, which sits on the second floor and features panoramic views of the estate. There is also the option of two junior suites, a king, superior king or family room.

Each room has its own unique design, but competing colour palettes, maximalist wallpapers and plush furnishings evoke the surreal world of Lewis Carroll’s tale throughout.

Named The Tempus after the Latin word for ‘time’, the building will also have its own clocktower, topped by a weathervane in the form of Charlton’s logo – an owl.

For guests in search of something to satisfy their appetite (or a late-night tipple), the new venue will also feature a bar and restaurant (though height-altering snacks won’t be on offer).

You can already book rooms at the hotel for spring 2023 onwards, with prices starting at £195 per night for two guests (including breakfast).
