Whether it’s a strong community feel, innovative food and drinks venues, energetic nightlife or a characterful blend of new and old architecture, there’s a lot that goes into making a place truly cool.

In our endless quest to know the ins and outs of cities around the world, for the last six years we’ve asked thousands of city-dwellers to tell us the snazziest parts of their hometown as part of Time Out’s annual ranking of the Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World. And now the results are in for 2023.

This year, over 12,000 people across the globe gave us their take. That shortlist was then refined and ranked by our network of city editors and local experts who know their cities better than anyone else.

And the coolest neighbourhood in the UK? Well that would be none other than the Baltic Triangle in Liverpool, which placed eleventh out of 40. It replaces last year’s coolest British neighbourhood, which was Cliftonville in Margate

Our Liverpool-based contributor Alice Porter said: ‘Fifteen years ago, what is now known as the Baltic Triangle was nothing more than a collection of largely abandoned shipping warehouses. But thanks to a huge regeneration project, they’re now populated by some of the best restauranteurs, artists and creatives in the city.

‘Only a short walk from Liverpool’s iconic Albert Dock, the Baltic – as it’s often affectionately termed – is where you’ll experience the city’s younger side, as lots of 20-and-30-somethings call this corner of Liverpool home.’

The title of 2023’s coolest neighbourhood in the world went to Laureles in Medellin, Colombia, which came up trumps for its nightlife and laidback reputation. Smithfield in Dublin landed in second and Carabanchel in Madrid claimed third.

Other corners of the UK that made the list were Edinburgh’s Leith, which ranked sixteenth, Glasgow’s West End at number 20 and London’s King’s Cross in twenty-fourth.
