Bristol, we’ve got good news. You might finally be getting a tram, which means no more walking up all those big hills.
A new mass transit system for Bristol has been in the works for ages, with an underground train system already ruled out due to the high costs of tunnelling. Now new plans for the greater Bristol area are being drawn up, and it looks like the preferred vehicle type is going to be a trams.
It’s expected that on July 26 three council heads and the West of England metro mayor Dan Norris will approve the plans and give them the green light to progress. A detailed report of potential routes is then expected to be presented in September. This will all be made possible with a multi-billion pound investment in public transportation in the area.
If it goes ahead, this won’t be the first time Bristol has had a tram system. The city first got an overground train network in 1875. It operated until 1941 when a Luftwaffe bomb destroyed its main power supply cables.
Locals shared their thoughts on the Bristol Live online forum. ‘Hydrogen buses would be better,’ argued one Bristolian, but others were in favour of the trams.
‘We know trams work. They are cheap to install and quick. And we have been waiting sooo long for this…’ one local responded.
What do you think of Bristol’s proposed tram system?
Getting around the UK
It’s not just Bristol that’s getting new transport links, as it looks like there could be changes and improvements made to rail services across the country: northern England is getting new east-to-west high-speed train routes, and a brand-new train service could soon be launched between London and Manchester.
