Following in the wake of air hubs at Leeds-Bradford, Bournemouth and London Stansted, East Midlands Airport is the latest UK travel hub to be getting some much-needed TLC.
A massive £120 million renovation project has just gotten underway at the aviation hub that includes upgraded security zones, brand-new security scanning technology and the scrapping of the 100ml liquids rule. Once finished, travellers can also expect EMA to have swanky new and improved toilets and seating.
It’s all very exciting stuff for Midlands air travellers – but be warned, there’s a while to wait before the works will be finished. EMA’s upgrades will apparently take a whopping five years to complete.
Steve Griffiths, East Midlands Airport’s managing director, said: ‘This is the start of a very exciting period for the airport. Our passenger numbers are almost back to pre-Covid levels and our already significant air cargo operation has capacity to expand, along with the potential for growth and investment that the East Midlands Freeport brings.’
There are mass makeovers happening around the UK’s airports right now, particularly as more sites are set to ditch the 100ml liquids limit and new tech is being tested that could do away with passports. Bournemouth Airport is getting a £5m glow-up and Leed-Bradford Airport is currently in the early stages of a £100m upgrade.
Did you see that UK passports are now more powerful than they were before?
Plus: Wales could be getting an official new name.
