’Tis the season of giving. From toy appeals for vulnerable children to volunteering at local food shelters, Christmas is a time when people really rally together to help those most in need. But Brits embrace the spirit of giving year-round. And this year, there was one city that gave more than any other.
GoFundMe data revealed that Liverpool was the UK’s most generous city in 2024, based on GoFundMe donations per capita. In particular, the city raised an astonishing £1.3 million pounds to support those affected by the Southport stabbings and the riots that that followed.
Alex McCormick set up a fundraiser after seeing images of Spellow Community Hub and Library being set alight, raising £250,000. She told PA news agency that she wasn’t surprised that Scousers were the most charitable people in the country.
She said: ‘I know we get a bad rep sometimes in the press, but I think if you live here or you have lived here, the people in this city generally will do anything for anyone.
‘It’s nice that it’s acknowledged but I really wouldn’t expect anything less from the city. I think it takes us back to the basics of just being human and seeing something wrong and wanting to do something to make it right.’
The library’s reopening was funded by the council and the money gathered from the fundraiser will go towards improvements ‘to make it as beneficial as possible to that community’, such as addditional activities for kids.
The UK’s second most charitable city according to GoFundMe was London, and Norwich placed third.
