Lots of eateries claim to be neighbourhood restaurants these days. But what actually defines one? To us, they should be reasonably priced, not too fancy, and have regulars from the local community. Now, Britain’s very best local restaurant has been revealed by the Good Food Guide.
The Good Food guide has crowned the top 100 local joints in Britain, and awarded top prizes to restaurants in eight UK regions, including one prize to the best resto overall. More than 60,000 cafés, bistros, pubs and small plates joints were nominated for this year’s awards. The guide then sent out secret inspectors to review them all, to come up with the definitive list of the best in the country.
Bavette in Leeds was named the best local restaurant in the UK. The guide called it a ‘pitch-perfect French bistro’. ‘With the cooking as dazzling as the warm-hearted service, it’s our model of the perfect local restaurant,’ it wrote. Only opening in February 2024, Bavette managed to climb its way to the top of the list. Bravo Bavette.
Mambow in Clapton, which Time Out crowned the best restaurant in London earlier this year, also made it into the top eight, while other winners included Med in Brighton, the Greyhound Inn in Pettistree and North Street Kitchen in Cornwall.
