The UK isn’t short of magnificent scenery, and from gorgeous national parks to lovely stretches of coast, there’s plenty of variety when it comes to the landscapes on our island. But our lakes have got to be a highlight – we have a whole district of them, after all.
Plenty of the UK’s lakes make great wild swimming spots, road trip destinations or backdrops for hiking holidays, and the Lake District as a whole was recently named one of the best natural heritage sites in the world. However, one lake in particular was just voted as the most beautiful of the bunch.
Lake Windermere, the 18 km body of water in Cumbria, has topped a ranking of the country’s most scenic places, claiming 36 percent of the votes from all the Brits who participated in a new survey, according to the Mail.
The lake is the largest in England, and is neighboured by Windermere village and Ambleside, which are both popular stopovers for hikers exploring the region on foot. However, you can also swim, cruise and cycle around the lake to explore it, too.
In second place was St Ives Bay, a 9 km crescent-shaped stretch of coast in Cornwall, which claimed 33 percent of the votes. Three destinations claimed joint third: St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, Cheddar Gorge in Somerset and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park in the Scottish Highlands.
Quite a lot to explore, right? Well, for an even more comprehensive list of the most beautiful places in the UK, you can check out our list here.
