It’s that time of year again: the time of year when Time Out publishes its official ranking of the coolest streets in the world. We surveyed 20,000 city-dwellers around the globe for our annual Time Out Index survey, then we crunched the numbers, spoke to the experts and whittled down the entries to 33 fabulous streets that are all worth visiting.
Here in the UK, Great Western Road in the vibrant Scottish city of Glasgow came in at number three. It was beat only by Gertrude Street in Melbourne at number two and Rue Wellington in Montreal at number one, with two other UK streets also making the cut: Deptford High Street in London at 17, and Cutting Room Square in Manchester at 21.
Great Western Road is a historic 18-mile-long road, and it has it all: from sweaty basement gigs at the Hug and Pint to the tranquil greenery of the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. Long, wide and colourful, Great Western Road is buzzing with that infectiously laid-back Glaswegian friendliness and has something interesting going on around the clock.
Surprised by its ranking? Think again. It seems like Scotland is having a bit of a moment right now: Edinburgh was named the best city in the world in 2022, thanks to its beauty, walkability and being generally pretty stress-free.
