It’s official: Britain’s best takeaway belongs to the North. The Just Eat Restaurant Awards, formerly the British Takeaway Awards, was held last month and was a star-studded celebration of all the glorious independent fast-food offerings here in the UK.
Munchies in Sheffield claimed the coveted national title at the event, which was held at The Londoner Hotel and attended by a bunch of seemingly random celebrities including Gok Wan and Fred Sirieix of ‘First Dates’ fame.
The halal takeaway also won Best Takeaway in Yorkshire and serves up gourmet burgers, wraps, milkshakes and loaded fries, with a generous number of veggie options. On its website, it says it prioritises sustainability and uses only the most ‘fresh and premium ingredients’.
Since opening six years ago, Munchies’ owners have also made a point of supporting local and international good causes, most recently flood relief in Pakistan. As both a regional and national winner, it will receive a cash prize totalling £6,000.
O’My Cod in Bridgend was recognised as the best Welsh takeaway and Sterling’s Asian fast food venue, Chicken Union, claimed the number-one spot in Scotland. Best Newcomer went to Manchester burger joint Archies and Best Vegan Menu was awarded to Hogless Roast in East London.
