When you think of British food, you might think of plates full of beige vegetables and pools of gravy. But the most popular dish in the UK? It’s actually a good ol’ curry. And specifically, a chicken tikka masala.
But with an Indian restaurant on every other corner, where does one find the absolute best of the best, I hear you cry? Fear not, the results are in. The publicly voted British Curry Awards (in collab with Just Eat) has just announced its winners for 2022.
The 18th annual ceremony took place on Monday November 28 in London. Apparently, the awards are also known as the ‘Curry Oscars’, a term coined by former prime minister David Cameron. Random. The awards selected ten UK regional winners, as well as crowning the UK’s ‘Best Takeaway’, ‘Best Newcomer’ and even ‘Best Personality’.
Voted ‘Best Newcomer’ was London’s Colonal Saab in Holborn, which offers up a modern take on Indian food complete with jazz music and opened in late 2021. But the one we all want to know about is which Indian takeaway is the best in the whole of the UK. And if you’re in Buckinghamshire, you’re lucky. The winner? Malik’s Express Kitchen in Gerrards Cross. Bad luck everyone else.
