The UK is a nation of fish and chips fiends. When it comes to battered cod and crispy hunks of potato, we’re famous the world over. So it sort of goes without saying that the title of ‘best fish and chips in the UK’ is both serious business and extremely controversial.

If anyone’s going to know the ins and outs of this country’s chippies, however, it’s the National Fish and Chip Awards. Organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers, every year it puts out a ranking of the finest fish-and-chip meals in the UK. The winners get not just supreme bragging rights but a trip to Norway.

The title of ‘Fish & Chip Takeaway of the Year’ was awarded to Whitehead’s Fish & Chips in Hornsea, East Yorkshire. This pretty, family-run establishment is Hornsea’s only chippy.

‘Fish & Chip Restaurant of the Year’, meanwhile, was given to Fish City in Belfast. A swanky bright-blue restaurant in Belfast city centre, it also picked up the ‘Environment and Sustainability Award’.

Here are the rest of the chippies that picked up prizes at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2023.
