So it’s seriously cold in the UK right now. Like, don’t-want-to-leave-the-house cold. But just because it’s winter, it doesn’t mean you can’t go on holiday. And if you don’t fancy heading to the Med in the depths of December (or you simply don’t have the cash), there are plenty of beaches right here in the UK that are worth the schlep.

Now new research by Parkdean Resorts has named the absolute best ones to visit during winter. The study took into account factors including the number of nearby cafés, snow days and Google searches to figure out the country’s ultimate wintry beaches.

And so where came out top? Whitley Bay, a majestic beach in Northumberland that seems to stretch out for ever (with a whopping 7.1 annual snow days every year). There are several walking trails you can follow, with some seriously nice sea views. Many of the hikes are kid-friendly, and St Mary’s Lighthouse is also well worth checking out.

Just behind Whitley Bay is Brighton Beach in East Sussex, which is an absolute classic for a winter day out (and not just because it’s full of warm arcades and pubs for when you get chilly). The third best winter beach is Robins Hood Bay in Yorkshire, a very picturesque fishing village with cracking family activities (and good seafood).
