Cardiff’s music scene could be about to get a massive boost, as one of its most famous music venues is set to get a major makeover. Clwb Ifor Bach has been the city’s legendary stop on the UK touring circuit for a whopping 40 years – and now it could be getting a massive glow-up.
Clwb Ifor Bach has seen gigs for the likes of Stereophonics, Coldplay, The Killers and Super Furry Animals, to name a few. And it has no plans to stop anytime soon. The venue on Womanby Street has plans to take over the derelict building next door and transform the space into a fully-accessible, all-round cool-looking multi-room space.
The venue has hired a design studio to help them out in achieving a place that’s aligned with its ‘character, charm and heritage’.
This isn’t just a big deal for Clwb Ifor Bach: it’s a big deal for Cardiff, too. The redevelopment will enable larger-scale performances and events, thanks to a proposed 500-capacity space. For more intimate gigs, another 200-capacity room is in the pipeline.
Planning applications have been submitted to the Cardiff County Council and the venue has launched a fundraising campaign to support the glow-up.
Here are some mock-ups of what Clwb Ifor Bach may look like, once revamped.
Guto Brychan, the chief executive of the venue said: ‘It’s been a long time since we released the concept designs for the redevelopment in early 2019 and finally being able to submit the planning application feels like a big step forward.’
‘This year we’re celebrating Clwb’s 40th birthday and want to remind people how long we’ve been here, and how important we are to the community and the cultural life of Cardiff.’
