The nightlife industry is struggling. Ever since the pandemic, we’ve seen more and more clubs and bars shutting up shop for good, with one study by the Night Time Industries Association estimating that five went out of business per-week in the first quarter of 2024. And the trend is showing no signs of slowing down.

This week, another brave soldier has been lost, this time north of the border. The Shed, which has become a south Glasgow institution in its 26 years of life, announced that it will be closing its doors for the last time on September 15, 2024, with the evening of September 14 being the club’s last ever night in operation.

‘The iconic building, like its custodians, has aged and hospitality demands constant innovation, energy and support to keep going,’ the club explained in a social media post on Saturday (August 31). ‘This place has meant so much to so many over the years, not least our amazing staff, who have contributed so much, thank you to everyone!’

The venue, which originally opened in the 1920s as the Marlborough Ballroom, became The Shed in 1998 and has been a favourite among punters in the southside ever since. Some voiced their disappointment on Instagram, commenting things like ‘Pure gutted, so many happy memories,’ and many, many gifs of people crying.

Shed are hosting a series of going away events over the next fortnight, including a screening of the Scotland v Poland match and several classic club nights, which you can buy tickets for here

RIP to a Glasgow icon. We’ll make sure to continue to ‘give good shed’ at Wunderbar in your memory.

Glasgow nights out according to Time Out

Shed may be closing, but Glasgow’s nightlife is not dead yet. Why not try out one of these excellent Glasgow pubs, or head to a cool cocktail bar for something a bit different? If you’re more into your food, dine at one of these restaurants for a delicious meal in the middle of the city.

ICYMI: Smoking could be banned in pub gardens and outdoor restaurants

Plus: Bristol could ban all cars from the city centre
