As anyone who’s ever visited Cardiff Market will no doubt already know, it’s a marvellously bustling and charmingly characterful sort of place. Home to not just stalls selling street food and fresh fish but also sellers of vinyl, vintage clothes and loads of other stuff, the indoor market is a must-stop destination for anyone visiting the Welsh capital.

One of Cardiff Market’s many charms is its age: this place is bloomin’ old. It dates all the way back to Victorian times, in fact. But now the Grade II-listed structure could receive a serious glow-up. The city’s council has announced a multi-million-pound renovation of the market that could see huge areas of it undergo significant change.

Cardiff Council’s ambitious plans says they intend to ‘protect, preserve and future-proof’ the building. The renovations will include everything from restoring the roof and replacing the windows to creating a 70-person seating area on the ground floor and building an ‘activity and education room’.

If all goes to plan, the glow-up will start in summer 2024 and be completed by sometime in 2026. It’s expected that the market – and many of the traders within it – will remain open throughout the renovation.
