When it comes to rankings of the best pizzas, you’ve got plenty of options. You’ve got global list like 50 Top Pizza (check out the 2023 edition here) and the world’s best pizza chef. Then, of course, there are Time Out’s very own (and, if you ask us, peerless) lists, like our best pizzerias, finest takeaway pizzas and legendary Clash of the Slices showdown.
Another pizza ranking comes from the Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association (PAPA), which revealed its ‘Independent Pizza Restaurant Award’ winner for 2023. The award was given out at a ceremony last week.
And this year’s prize went to... Taste of Italy in Chelmsford! It topped a shortlist that included Scott’s All Day in Cambridge, Pizza Metro in London, Pizzaland in Bristol and The Woodyard in Woodbridge.
Any devoted followers of the PAPA awards will note that this is actually the second year in a row that the Essex pizzeria has scooped the prize. According to EssexLive, all of the pizzas at Taste of Italy are made using Italian DOP ingredients. The place is so authentic, in fact, that apparently it punishes anyone who wants pineapple on their pizza with a whopping £149 charge.
