It seems more and more of us are waking up to the wonderful holiday spots right here on UK shores (that, and the cost-of-living crisis is just making trips abroad more and more spenny). Don’t believe us? Well, hotel booking site Trivago has revealed that Brits are overwhelmingly choosing UK destinations instead of trips overseas.
Booking data from the site shows that five of the top ten booking destinations for the second half of 2024 are in the UK. London and Edinburgh were the top two spots (nothing surprising there), but swooping in as the fourth most popular destination, just below Dubai and above the likes of New York, Benidorm and Amsterdam was... Blackpool.
And we think people are definitely on to something. After all, Blackpool is a classic English seaside resort with its iconic pleasure beach, pier and illuminations.
It’s always been a popular spot. Back in the day northern factory workers would descend upon Blackpool’s shores en masse during their annual respite known as ‘wake weeks’. But it’s certainly having a renaissance and was recently revealed as the home of the most luxurious hotel in the whole of Europe.
According to the Trivago, part of the switch to staycations is down to the soaring costs of flights (no pun intended). Just last week Ryanair warned of further price increases over the next few months. Also taking the cost of living crisis into account, Blackpool’s popularity makes sense: a study at the beginning of the year named it Britain’s cheapest staycation (so long as you don’t opt for the luxury hotel, obviously).
Here’s Trivago’s full ranking of the most popular travel destinations among Brits for early 2024:
- London
- Edinburgh
- Dubai
- Blackpool
- New York
- Benidorm
- Amsterdam
- Liverpool
- Manchester
- Dublin
