Oxford train station is about to getting a massive (and much-needed) £161 million glow-up. It’s hoped the project will boost capacity at what is one of the busiest stations in southern England.
The refurb will involve creating a brand-new entrance, track and platform. A government spokesperson said it would support almost 10,000 new jobs and bring investment to tech and science businesses across Oxfordshire.
Some of the cash will also go towards renovating a road bridge on Oxford’s Botley Road, making it tall enough for double-decker buses to pass beneath, and creating three high-speed crossovers, which will help increase services and reduce journey times.
Pre-pandemic, the station hosted 8.7 million passenger journeys annually and footfall is expected to increase over the next few years.
If you’re planning a summer trip to the city, you may need to rejig your plans. From July 29 to August 6, all rail lines through the city will be closed for track work and preparations for the new platform. Part of Botley Road will close from April to October 2023 and again from March to October 2024.
That will inevitably all lead to lots of disruption. But officials say the temporary inconvenience will be worth it in the long run, as the project is ‘vital’ to improving services.
