2024 is set to be a big year for Bournemouth Airport. Thanks to a big rise in services and new deals with various airlines, the Dorset transport hub has announced that it’s investing a huge £5 million into expansion. The money will be spent on new facilities, equipment, staff and training as it expects to see more than one million travellers pass through its gates over the next 12 months.
The news comes after Ryanair confirmed it will be starting twice weekly flights from B’mouth to the city of Agadir in Morocco from April 1. Plus, Tui has plans to add a second airplane to the hub, making an extra 60,000 seats available (across the year, not on a single flight) and increasing services to and from the airport by a third.
The last time Bournemouth exceeded one million passengers, as it expects to do this year, was way back in 2008. The new investments will see an upgraded security system that will allow liquid restrictions and relax current measures that require electronics to be taken out of bags. The information desk, baggage screening and Border Force desks will all be upgraded for better efficiency, too.
Steve Gill, managing director at the airport, called it a ‘tremendous achievement’ and said that it ‘reflects the great range of destinations available from Bournemouth Airport and our commitment to providing the best possible experience for passengers’.
He added: ‘While our investment programme continues, we thank passengers for their patience and aim to complete the majority of work during the quieter winter months.’
