Having a fear of flying is pretty understandable. Logical, even. There is nothing natural about being thrust thousands of feet into the air in a metal tube, with the knowledge that if anything fails you will surely fall to your death. Some people cope with this objectively terrifying witchcraft by explaining the ‘physics’, others take valium (responsibly and only when prescribed).

If you are a nervous flyer, consider only travelling with British Airways from now on, because the airline has just been rated one of the world’s safest airlines for 2024.

The very aptly named airlineratings.com carries out an annual investigation in which it compares different airlines based on factors like crashes, numbers of ‘serious incidents’ and age of aircraft. This year, top spot went to Air New Zealand, while British Airways came in a very respectable fifteenth place – two spots up from last year.

Considering the fact that 385 airlines were included in the list, that’s not too shabby at all. EasyJet and Ryanair also came second and third respectively in the budget carrier category, which might come as a shock to some – neither carrier is exactly known for comfort. Australia’s Jetstar was the safest low-cost option.

You can access the full study here, but remember, flying is still more safe statistically than driving, or sitting under a coconut tree. So sit back, relax, and enjoy your next flight in the knowledge that you’re not on the Alaska Airlines service where an entire chunk of plane just fell off mid-flight. Yes, that did happen. Happy flying!

Did you see that this seaside city was named the most relaxed place in the UK?
