As everyone’s beloved nationwide bakery chain, Greggs is currently celebrating its ongoing popularity by continuing to open branches across the UK. But perhaps Greggs should be looking back over its shoulder: another high-street baking chain, Wenzel’s, is hoping to rival its pastry fuelled success.

Since being established in London in 1975, Wenzel’s has opened over 100 stores across the capital, the south east of England and the Midlands. Now, it has its sights set on the south-west and is planning to open nine new venues by the end of the year.

Like its competitor, Wenzel’s sells its bakes at super affordable prices. Slices of cake cost as little as £1 and if you use the Too Good to Go app you can secure a stash of hot or cold food worth £12 for just £4.75 or £3.75 respectively.

The announcement comes after four other new stores were recently opened in Winchester, Southampton, King’s Langley and Northampton.

Here’s the full list of new Wenzel’s stores set to open over the next four months.

  • Hazelmere, Buckinghamshire - September 20
  • Harpenden, Hertfordshire - end of September
  • Poole, Dorset - beginning of October
  • Salisbury Town Centre - mid October
  • West Thurrock, Essex - mid October
  • Camberley, Surrey - end of October
  • Bracknell, Berkshire - November
  • Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire - November
  • Lakeside Shopping Centre, Essex - December

Did you see that after shutting 170 branches, this beloved UK high-street bakery chain is making a comeback?
