The Nene Valley Railway’s steam and diesel trains have been chugging through the Cambridgeshire countryside for more than 50 years. The NVR describes itself as ‘the UK's leading international steam attraction’, but now, thanks to financial pressures, the long-term impact of the pandemic and lower visitor numbers, the railway needs to raise £300,000 to stay open.

The railway runs from Peterborough Nene Valley station to Yarwell Junction, stopping by Orton Mere, Overton and Wansford. Fundraised cash would go toward essential repairs, infrastructure upgrades and restoration projects.

£300,000 is a lot of money, but locomotive enthusiasts have quickly rallied behind the attraction and launched a campaign to help raise funds. The NVR gathered an impressive £20,000 in just two weeks, so there are reasons to be optimistic.

If you don’t want to see Nene Valley go, you can do your bit by contributing to its GoFundMe. Michael Purcell, chair of the Nene Valley Railway said: ‘We are calling upon all those who cherish the heritage and charm of Nene Valley Railway to join us in this crucial effort.

‘Your contributions will not only help us weather the current storm but will ensure that the railway can continue to inspire and delight our visitors and volunteers for years to come. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference in safeguarding the future of this much-loved heritage railway.’
