Let’s be honest, airports have got a pretty bad rep right now. What with all the lost luggage and the day-long delays and the cancellations. So how about some good airport news?

We’ve got just the ticket. One airport in the UK has managed to overcome the industry’s bad press, and scooped the top award for the best airport in the UK and Ireland at the Travel Industry Awards 2022. Say hello to your winner: Newcastle International Airport.

The panel of judges at the awards praised the airport for its ‘strong new routes across a range of airlines and its impressive six-minute security average’. It was also commended for its environmental credentials, as it has vowed to become net zero by 2035 – way ahead of a lot of others.

The awards were run by the Travel Trade Gazette. Newcastle was one of seven entrants for airport of the year, alongside the likes of George Best Belfast City Airport, London Stansted and Birmingham Airport.

Nick Jones, chief executive of Newcastle International Airport, said: ‘This achievement is a testament to the work and dedication of employees and business partners across the airport who have come together to create positive passenger experiences. It is a great achievement for everyone at the Airport who has contributed to the award-winning service we deliver.’

ICYMI: these are the most popular baby names in the UK right now.

Plus: two of the UK’s most famous indie cinemas are closing for good.
