The Waverley paddle steamer has been chugging across UK waters since the 1940s. Built in 1946 to replace the 1899 Waverley sunkat Dunkirk, she’s the last seagoing paddle steamer in the entire world and in 2003 she was dubbed a ‘vessel of pre-eminent national importance’
These days, Waverley looks the same as she did all those decades ago and offers day, afternoon and evening cruises all around the country. This summer, she’s doing a series of journeys along the south west coast and is returning to Torquay in Devon for the first time since the 1980s.
On board, passengers can watch as the steam powered engines turn the boat’s huge paddles. All the while, there’s a dining saloon serving up hot meals, period lounges offering tea and cake and a souvenir shop should you wish to pick up a little memento.
Waverly will set sail from Plymouth and Falmouth from August 28 to September 1. It’ll cruise by Dodman Point, Looe Bay, and the Rame Heritage Coast and will offer a sunset cruise from Plymouth to Whitsand Bay and Cawsand Bay. The boat will reunite with Torquay on August 30 and September 1. It’s journeys from there will include views of Kingswear Castle, Dartmouth, Lyme Bay, Portland Bill, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.
Dominic McCall, captain of the vessel, said: ‘In 2024 we received a fantastic welcome when Waverley visited the South West with tickets selling out as locals and visitors flocked aboard. Sailing Waverley into the picturesque Fowey harbour was special but the highlight for many was meeting Paddle Steamer Kingswear Castle on the River Dart, the sight of both paddlers side by side and their steam whistles tooting was memorable for all that were aboard.
‘This year I am delighted to announce that Torquay has been added to the cruise itinerary as we further develop the unique sailings Waverley can offer.’
