Cardiff Bay, is a train station served by one single train track, with trains coming and going from Cardiff Queen Street and nowhere else. It’s a pretty bizarre service, all things considered. It goes a single mile, up and down, delivering passengers to the millennium parade, which was constructed 25 years ago in honour of the new century.

Not many train stations in the country only link to one single stop, thus Cardiff Bay earned the title of worst-served in the UK, despite its one single stop being the second largest station in Wales. This however, is changing.

As of last Sunday (June 2) trains from Cardiff Bay now connect to seven different stations. What a luxury. The new service will run between the waterside terminus and Pontypridd, stopping every step of the way. The only downside is that this service only runs 5 times an hour, instead of the previous 6, but the hope is that it will return to 6 as soon as another track has been constructed and electrified.

The new services are coming as part of a £1 billion investment into the city’s transport, which is also funding the construction of a brand new £100 million tram in Cardiff. This tram service will also connect to Cardiff bay station once it is built, and the council hopes that that will act as a connection from the city’s centre to the brand new indoor arena currently under construction in the area.

If you live in the Cardiff Bay area, we hope you’ll make the most of your newfound ability to get to Radyr without changing trains.
