Gastropubs are sort of like normals pubs, but posher. They’re for when you want all the best bits of a pub – the cosy interior, the refreshing pints, the friendly chat – with a meal that wouldn’t look out of place in the UK’s finest restaurants.
To help you find the most outstanding pubs-cum-restaurants in the country, for the last 17 years Top 50 Top 50 Gastropubs has published, you guessed it, a ranking og the nation’s top food-inclined boozers. This year’s winners were announced this week, picked by more than 350 experts within the world of hospitality, from food writers to celeb chefs. In other words, people whose opinions (like us at Time Out) you can really trust.
Estrella Damm’s top 50 gastropubs for 2025 were announced in a swanky ceremony on Monday (January 27). And taking the coveted number one spot for an impressive third year in a row was The Unruly Pig in Woodbridge, Suffolk.
The judges described the Unruly as a ‘winsome and warm’ pub that serves ‘filling and well-crafted pub food in an environment that reflects the personalities of the people behind the stunning venue’. Time Out went to see the lauded gastropub for ourselves – you can read what we thought of it here.
As for the rest of the list, 11 pubs in London made it into the top 50, with Soho’s The Devonshire landing in second place overall. The Star Inn in the Yorkshire village of Harome (which has been number one in the past) picked up bronze. Top 50 Gastropubs called it ‘perfect country pub’ with a ‘dedication to fine produce and playful but refined cooking’.
The White Hart in Fyfield, Oxfordshire was flagged as this year’s one to watch, The Abbey Inn in the North York Moors won most sustainable pub of the year, and John Hooker of the Cornish Arms in Devon was crowned chef of the year.
