Greggs is a national treasure. It’s known across the land for its sausage rolls, dead-cheap coffees and variety of sweet treats, and now Greggs is taking the logical next step as a business: opening up a champagne bar.

Okay, we admit: no matter how much you love the Geordie bakery, you probably wouldn’t consider it an upmarket joint. Greggs is cheap, simple fare that never fails to deliver, but it isn’t exactly fancy. In other words, it’s not the sort of place you’d naturally trust to choose a good wine. That’s why Greggs is pairing up with designer department store Fenwick in Newcastle to open up the pop-up restaurant and bar for just over two months, giving you plenty of time to see what it’s like to visit an alternate world where Greggs is posh.

From October 24 until the end of the year, you’ll be able to spend anywhere between £10 and £425 to sample some of the finest champagnes Fenwick have to offer alongside your favourite Greggs classics, which will come with an ‘elevated selection of condiments and garnishes’. Intriguing, isn’t it?

The pair collaborated last year on ‘Greggs Bistro’, which was a success, so hopefully this bar is just as well executed. It will be open from 11.30am daily until 6pm every day except Thursday, when it’ll stay open an extra hour, and Sunday, when it’ll close at 4pm. The menu has been curated by an actual chef, Fenwick’s Executive Head Chef Mark Reid, who has added contemporary twists to the bakery’s savoury selection, such as serving the sausage roll with a chilli and honey sauce or doing a steak bake with creamy peppercorn aioli.

The cherry on top? When you run out of your £75 a glass champagne, you’ll have a vintage crystal bell which you can ring for a top-up. Downton Abbey eat your heart out.

You can reserve a seat here, or view the whole menu, including the selection of cocktails inspired by baked goods, here. Enjoy your visit – this is definitely the fanciest way you’ll ever enjoy a cheesy bake.
