Everyone has a preferred supermarket. Is it the one with the highest-quality goods? The one that’s best value for money? Or is it simply the nearest supermarket to your house?

Weighing in today (February 18) with its own carefully considered take on Britain’s supermarkets is Which?. The consumer advice company has just published its annual ranking of the country’s best and worst supermarket chains – with a familiar sight in top spot.

Which? judges supermarkets on a huge range of factors, from value for money and product quality to checkout queue times, staff helpfulness and ‘store appearance’. This year’s report was based on an online survey of 3,206 members of the UK public, and was split between supermarkets’ in-store and online performance.

Top of the pile this year (for in-store experience) came M&S. Marks and Spencer received a score of 79 percent, scoring well across the board but particularly in the quality of its own-brand products.

Marks and Sparks has topped Which?’s supermarkets list for the past four years, though in 2025 it has been officially labelled a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP). This means it meets strict criteria for ‘customer service, value for money and quality of own-label and fresh products’.

Second in Which?’s list was Tesco, which is no mean feat considering it’s the UK’s biggest supermarket chain. Tesco scored 74 percent and did particularly well with its store appearance, product range and stock availability. Third was a tie between Aldi, Iceland and Waitrose.

Down the other end of the table, Asda and Morrisons both came bottom. Scoring 66 percent, neither received more than three stars (out of five) in any of Which?’s categories.
