You already know what your favourite road is, and you absolutely have one that you hate with every fibre of your being, but what are the actual best and worst motorways in the country? National Highways decided to conduct a survey of over 9,000 drivers to figure out exactly where the good, bad, and ugly roads are across the country right now.
And, according to the findings, the M40 from London to Birmingham is an absolute delight to drive on. Only 21 percent of respondents described it as ‘unsatisfactory’, which, sadly, is a very good score.
In contrast, the M42, also near Birmingham, was named the worst, with almost 44 percent of people naming it unsatisfactory. One expert told the Independent that he reckons the ongoing roadworks on the road were partly to blame for its low score: ‘We had a lot of road works around Birmingham airport… People are less happy with journeys that take a bit longer.’ Go figure.
Works are already planned for the M42, so hopefully it won’t be the worst for much longer. Further north, the M62, which stretches from east to west from Manchester to Leeds, was the second worst. The London orbital motorway, the M25, was third lowest rated.
Drivers are overall more peeved with the state of the roads this year, the survey found, so maybe there’s something in the water, or in the petrol. National highways say they are constantly working to improve conditions, so let’s hope this time next year paints a much brighter picture of Britain’s motorways. All we can do is dream – just not from behind the wheel.
