Whether you believe in its healing properties, or you just think it looks pretty, no one can deny the magnificence of a full moon. As if full moons aren’t normally big, shiny or ethereal enough, every once in a while they become supermoons – and we’re getting one of them in the UK this week.

Supermoons are when the full moon coincides with the orb’s closest approach to Earth, making it appear larger and more luminous than normal. There have already been two supermoons this year, with another expected in November, but this month’s Hunter’s Moon is set to be the biggest and brightest of them all.

You won’t want to miss it, so here’s all the info you need.

What’s the significance of the Hunter’s Moon?

It’s name comes from Native American tradition and refers to the time of year that hunters would be most active, prepping for the winter months ahead.

For any spiritualists out there, the Hunter’s Moon apparently marks the perfect time to focus on your goals for winter and manifest.

When will it be visible in the UK?

The super Hunter’s Moon will rise in the UK on the evening of Thursday, October 17. It will appear full for around three days.

How to see October 2024’s Hunter’s Moon

Just look up! As long as you have a clear view of the sky and there aren’t too many clouds, it’ll be hard to miss.

If you own a telescope or pair of binoculars, take this opportunity to to zoom in on the moon’s surface and see its craters in more detail.

The best time to watch

There isn’t one prime time to see the super Hunter’s Moon. It’ll rise at 5.56pm BST but will be visible throughout the night.

How much brighter is the moon during a full moon?

Full moons are around six times brighter than a half moon. That’s because when the moon is full, the Earth is between it and the sun. The sun’s light is hitting the surface straight on from our perspective and there are few shadows.

But remember, this isn’t just a full moon. It’s a supermoon. And since that’s when the moon is closer to Earth, it can be up to another 30 percent brighter.

When is the next full moon and supermoon?

The next full moon will be the Beaver Moon in November, which also happens to be the fourth and final supermoon of the year.
