Summer has been particularly dismal this year. Yes, there have been a few days of sunshine, but for the most part June and July has seen rain, rain and more rain. Wimbledon saw lower attendance than normal thanks to the wet weather and there have been a number of yellow warnings in place over the last week – predictions that this could be the wettest summer in 100 years really are ringing true.

We had hopes things would get better, but forecasters aren’t so sure. In fact, forecasters reckon this could be Britain’s chilliest summer in 24 years.

And to make matters worse, the UK apparently has a ‘European Monsoon’ heading straight towards us. We’re set to get strong Atlantic winds and heavy downpour as the tail-end of Hurricane Beryl flies over from America.

A Met Office forecaster told the Metro that the weather ‘will remain unsettled, and next week is likely to see a mostly showery, westerly breeze possibly a more settled spell in mid-week then a showery northwesterly flow resuming.

‘Winds are likely to be gusty near heavy showers and thunderstorms.’

The UK’s average temperature so far this summer is 12.8C, which is 1C below the normal. Met Office data suggests it could even go below the wintry summer temperatures we felt back in 2012.

Forecaster Aidan McGivern said: ‘The UK’s summer so far has been remarkably cold by recent standards. Since the year 2000, only 2012 was this cold from June 1 to July 8.’

Well, might as well keep that anorak and woolly jumper out for good. The rain isn’t going away any time soon.
